An exceptional series of 6 free webinars from 27th September to 29th November 2022

Alexander Lowen (1910-2008) built on the foundations laid by his mentor Wilhem Reich (1897-1957), by creating the principles of Bioenergetic Analysis and further developed his character structure types. He taught his approach and wrote about his devotion to Bioenergetics in his books The Language of the Body and Bioenergetics

Lowen was not only a strong believer in Reich’s functional identity principle, he was also a keen observer of his patients and had a special talent for body reading. He developed a chart that defined five-character types: the schizoid, the oral, the psychopath, the masochist and the rigid

Lowen understood the character, not as a personality disorder, but as the structure that describes the defensive evolutionary history of the individual, studied in a psychic, bodily and energetic function. Therefore, the body language represents the evolutionary expression of the individual and in some way her/his struggle for survival. Character expresses the vital function of the individual but also what her/his mind “lies”.

The International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis Assoc. (IIBA), in collaboration with several of its International Faculty Members from France, Canada, USA, Germany and Brazil, are pleased to present a six-part webinar series on Bioenergetic Analysis!

WEBINAR II: Schizoid Structure: An Existential Struggle for the Right to Exist

October 13, 2022 – 07:00 – 09:00 pm (CEST – UTC +2)

Language: English | Simultaneous Translation: French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Russian

Webinar Description

At the very beginning of life, when an infant comes into the world in a cold and hostile environment, his young and fragile organism is profoundly impacted by the lack of a warm and safe “ground” supportive of his growth. Hence, the infant experiences a state of shock as he struggles to survive in an adverse environment. This primitive experience will shape his relationship to himself, to others, and to the world. In this webinar we will explain the kind of family dynamics the schizoid person grew up in, and how the lack of safety affected him somatically, psychically as well as in his attachment pattern. We will discuss transference and countertransference issues that arise in the work with a person of the schizoid type. Finally, we will see how to create a safe therapeutic environment and how to use bioenergetic exercises to help that person reconnect with an inner experience of safety and aliveness.

1. Welcome
2. Presentation
a. The etiology of the schizoid structure
b. The psychic and somatic impact of lack of a safe base
c. Transference and countertransference issues in the work with schizoid patients
3. Experiential
a. Creating safety in the therapeutic space
b. Bioenergetic strategies to help schizoid clients heal the head/body split and reconnect with a sense of aliveness both bodily and psychically
4. Q & A

Learning objectives

1. Identify the family dynamics conducive to the elaboration of a schizoid structure from a bioenergetic perspective.
2. Describe tension patterns and understand their relationship to the psychic organization of the schizoid structure.
3. Understand the type of attachment pattern as well as the neurobiological implications related to the lack of a safe base early in life.
4. Analyze transference and countertransference issues in working with Schizoid clients.
5. Experiment various bioenergetic exercises designed to help patients feel the aliveness in their body.

WEBINAR III: Oral character: Understanding and Treating the Abandoned Child

October 25, 2022 – 07:00 – 09:00 pm (CEST – UTC +2)

Language: English | Simultaneous Translation: French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Russian

Webinar Description

In the first year of life, we need to receive enough love to develop a secure bond. When a child is not given enough love, they deflate like a balloon and collapse, in order to the suppress the pain of feeling abandoned. This workshop will teach you the dynamics of the Oral Character, increase your compassion for the Oral Character, provide the most effective therapeutic stance from a psychodynamic view, and provide Bioenergetic tools for helping the client.

1. Welcome
2. Presentation
a. Dynamics of oral character (age, attachment wound, somatic response)
b. Demonstration / illustration of the body holding patterns
c. What the client needs from the therapist
3. Experiential
a. Hand exercises
b. Wrist exercises
c. Strategies to help the Oral client feel held and stand on their own.
4. Q & A

Learning objectives

In this workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of and compassion toward the Oral character and be able to take an effective therapeutic stance using Bioenergetic methods.

1. Gain an understanding of the psychodynamic world of the Oral Character.
2. Deepen your compassion for the struggle of the Oral Character.
3. Identify defensive and adaptive holding patterns.
4. Analyze transference and countertransference issues in working with the Oral.
5. Learn effective therapeutic tools for treating an Oral Client.

WEBINAR IV: Psychopathic structure: Who accepts you for just being?

November 10, 2022 – 06:00 – 08:00 pm (CEST – UTC +1)

Language: English | Simultaneous Translation: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Russian

Webinar Description

When children first get on their feet and start walking, they get a whole new view of the world: Finally, being tall and independent! When the child’s aspirations are pushed unilaterally by parents toward success, the child’s basic needs and growth are hindered. This creates a basic attitude of holding oneself up, of controlling, of devaluating the other or oneself. This webinar will teach you the etiology of the Psychopathic Character, increase your senses for the expressions of and empathy for the Psychopathic Character, provide effective body orientated psychotherapeutic tools from a reflection of transference and counter transference with clients with a Psychopathic Character.

1. Welcome
2. Presentation
a. Etiology – Lowen’s concepts of narcissism and the psychopathic structure
b. The appearance of psychopathic character structure in anatomy & Bioenergetic practice
c. Bioenergetic interventions on clients with a psychopathic character structure, including transference and counter transference
3. Experiential
a. The bitter-sweet doing nothing: How can we do nothing, but be?
b. The joy of fear of falling
4. Q & A

Learning objectives

November 22, 2022 – 06:00 – 08:00 pm (CEST – UTC +1)

Language: English | Simultaneous Translation: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Russian

Webinar Description

With the neurological and muscular system maturation which allows controlling movements, exploring spaces, taking, and holding things in hands, controlling sphincters and all sort of actions “out of the mom’s lap” comes the need for self-determination and independence. It is the process of becoming a subject, separated from the object. This is a delicate moment also for the mother and the way she responds to baby’s sense of independence is going to be part of the way of being, and so the way of suffering, this new person is becoming.

1. Welcome
2. Presentation
a. What’s is involved in the masochist suffering: from the beginning
b. How the energetic dynamics sustain the psychological and emotional masochist patterns
c. Stubbornness or fight for the Self? The importance of deep and sincere respect from the therapist: Transference and countertransference issues.
d. The masochist’s mother as the representant of the social submission
3. Experiential
a. “Build” in our bodies the muscular and breath masochist patterns for holding the energy
b. Experiencing movements and expression inside this “building”
c. Experience to intensify and to undo the tension with some known bioenergetic movements, possible to be used in the virtual sessions, too.
4. Q &A

Learning objectives

1. Identify the family dynamics

A rigid character limits the energy flow in the body because as a child she/he was told “no” so often that she/he makes a commitment to control her/his world. Liane Zink will teach bioenergetic strategies to help rigid clients heal and how they can begin to enjoy the pleasure of not having to do anything.
